Bands Vs. Some Summertime Activities

Dang, I haven’t been this stoked about a whole genre of fictional song titles that our characters don’t normally play since those pages with the Christmas carols.

As a bass player, I will never understand how to contort my fingers into those crazy shapes.

But also, as a terrible bass player, I will never understand how to do slap bass either,

I’m the opposite, honestly – I’ve never picked up a bass without just thinking it seems like a Wrong Guitar where the frets are too big and the strings are too heavy!

Turns out I’m Turpentine! I’ve always secretly wanted to be more like Turpentine on the inside, but I act more like Honey on the outside, so I really had no idea who I would get. I was surprised! I love how the answer options aren’t clearly one character or another.

I really wanted to make a lot of the questions sort of abstract, and about how characters think and relate to others, rather than super-obvious surface level stuff. I like how some people have been surprised at their result, and others aren’t!
(It told me I’m Turpentine too, which…yeah, sort of, though I know I’m also Honey in a lot of ways.)

I like how really, Honey is equally likely to be found at either the dolphin show or the dolphin show protest.

I think she may be seriously conflicted between how concerned she is for the welfare of dolphins, and how genuinely she just enjoys SEEING dolphins!

As a player of pianos, organs, clarinets, and saxophones, I find that all guitar playing looks like some sort of horrifying demonic ritual. Human fingers were not meant to do those things. D:

Messing around with possible melodies for that song, I’m kind of confused whether it’s in G major (which would make c-g-a a IV-I-II progression) or C major (Which would make it a I-V-VI). IV-I-II doesn’t strike me as a very folk like progression, but at the same time if it’s in C major, then it ends on an inconclusive cadence.

Also I’m kind of curious whether Honey would be at a dolphin show or a dolphin show protest outside of trying to run into Turpentine.

Oh, this is interesting — and I honestly don’t know! It’s so clear where my limitations are: I’ve played instruments for most of my life, but I really don’t know very much about music theory or the non-lyrics side of songwriting. I basically just created a fictional universe where I can freely obsess over making up songs that seem plausible without sound.

… All I learned from Music Theory was a lot of ways to garnish music off the cuff with ornamentation, and how to drive theorists nuts with things like Missien’s scales or the Enigmatic scale. But really helped me out with jazz improv, how to create tension then resolve it, so a plus there.

I’m saying I’m jealous.

I’ve honestly never heard of Missien’s scales, and I’d like to know more? I hadn’t heard of the enigmatic scale either, but google explained that one.

To be honest, I’m no expert in theory; I just picked a few things up here and there. Honestly, if you’re writing music, you don’t really need to know too much; I worry a lot about scaring kids away from songwriting when I talk about it.

Sorry misspelled, they’re by Olivier Messiaen, a composer. He used math to create these modes of sounds that rely on symmetry to create very distinct sounding scales. If you know enough theory to understand dissonance and consonance in Baroque, these scales will drive you up the wall trying to follow common practice rules, or create chords that make you rethink how to play, such as using more suspensions or purposefully skipping tones to create something enigmatic while also still being a chord. Messiaen and his work themselves are very interesting to read and listen to, and a lot of material about them can be found online.

I tried learning to play the ukulele and found that I’m too lazy to put in the practice it would take to play an instrument.

As far as the personality test goes…I’m Coco? I guess I get that. Her hat is pretty rad.

The ukulele seems like a good pick to try, even if it’s not for you. They’re so cute, and conveniently portable.

I got Honey and I was a bit surprised. I’m not as nice as her and I’d like to think I’m not as naive but maybe I am and just can’t see it?

The quiz is definitely to be taken with a grain of salt! It’s possible to get Honey if you’re really similar to her, but also if you just, say, like crafts and baking and singing and don’t get MORE points for any other character.

I got Honey Hart, which really does not surprise me at all. I’m innocent/naïve and want to save the world. And I always hope for happy endings so sweet your teeth rot.

I like how the quiz has silence as an answer for every mandatory question, which bears the result of Zero. Part of me was hoping that there would be a chance of getting Zero based on actual personality but I still got a small chuckle over the “…” option.

That being said, I got Domme on the test, which surprised me at first. But I guess I can see the whole “being in the ‘dark’ band but still being the most level-headed” deal.

I was kind of expecting to get Coco, as I too am gay and in possession of that panda hat (and the unmanageable hair). Ah well. The quiz is still a brilliant idea.

(Aside note: I’m recommending this web comic to a couple people and chances are they’ll be able to identify me with the description of “panda-hat owning homosexual”. Hey, guys.)

On a re-read (second read, to be exact), and I had missed the Quiz™ the first time. So, did it, and I got our dearest Honey Hart. Honestly, makes sense, I do identify with her a lot. Might try a cosplay someday, though, I don’t have the talent for that, probably.
Anyways, lovely webcomic, hopefully you’ll continue it one day, but even if you don’t, love the work you’ve done here, and love re-reading it.
