Honey Vs. The Power Of Friendship

And so we wrap up this episode! This is one thing I for sure have in common with Honey Hart (and the majority of BVB characters): there’s no “might” about whether I’ll have fun wearing some over-the-top costume accessory if the opportunity is presented.

Also: while I was working on this, I just constantly kept thinking about the Letters From The Princess in Super Mario Bros. 3, and I eventually had to do this:

Weird thing that always bothered me: why is the P-wing a jewel? It’s troubling to imagine

This always bothered me too! I think everything that gets sent with the letters — wing, cloud, music box, ? — is referred to as “a jewel”, and the items in general are a little confusing if you try to think about whether you’re supposed to interpret them as physical objects of a certain size.

It always disappointed me, even as a child, that the P-wing just gives you a super-flight-powered version of the raccoon suit, instead of having the same effect but giving you a sprite with BADASS WINGS. I just want everyone to have wings, apparently.

Super nerdy answer is that the Japanese version calls it a “treasured item” (takaramono) and whoever translated it had to shorten the amount of characters and historically decided “Jewels are totally like, treasured, right?” But Mario’s power ups are super magical, so why shouldn’t it couldn’t be a magic jewel? Perhaps that’s better than the alternative, that it’s a Koopa Paratroopa’s wing that was ripped off from its body. :X

Ok, yes, that makes a lot of sense. I suspected it was a translation thing, but was too lazy to look it up. And yeah, all of this does ultimately end up at “MAGIC is why” — like, leaf = flying raccoon costume.

I like the idea that it’s just a wing ripped from a Paratroopa’s body and that like the Hammer Brothers suit is just like THE SHELL OF A HAMMER BROTHER, REMOVED VIA TERRIBLE SURGERIES! Like by the time he reaches DARK LAND Mario just has the worst thousand-yard stare and doesn’t even flinch when like horrible hands drag him into vortexes and such

There is no way I can express how cool this entire page is without excessive swearing, so I’ll just restate what I said when the Facebook page went up. This is super keen!

Hey, thanks! BVB is totally not the kind of comic that’s *everyone’s* thing, but it makes me happy when someone finds it who really likes it.

Status quo restored. This was a really fun story arc, where we got to explore a lot of different aspects of characters we hadn’t before. Always looking forward to what you come up with next!

Oh, yeah, “Kuribo” was in the original Mario letter — it’s a Goomba. (also, the level with the shoes is so outstanding – I remember kids like fighting over who got to do it.)
